Whether you're in the military or not, you can easily acquire ammo cans from almost any military or outdoor supply store, catalog or army & navy surplus outlet. And although they're not that very expensive, should you find a store or catalog selling'em for more than $5, just keep looking until you find the price you're willing to pay for it.
Now I might be letting the "cat-out-of-the-hat" and giving away some store secrets, but these merchants only pay about $1 (and probably less) for these 5.56mm ammo cans. How do I know this? I once bought a pallet load (100) of 5.56mm ammo cans from the US Gov't and paid only $20 for'em. Yep, that's right bubba, only 20 cents a can, (100 x .20 = $20).
And this is what these store merchants do, they buy'em in bulk quantity (at least 100 ammo cans or more) from the US Gov't/DoD and then turn around and sell'em for 5 times or more than what they paid for'em. Talk about making a nice profit, huh?
Now there are several ways you can convert a metal ammo can into a barbecue grill, and this is just one way;
First you'll need to acquire some chicken wire (for a grill), some aluminum foil (so you can clean it up easier when you're finished using it), and of course some fuel such as charcoal or wood.
Now you can either use it "as is" by placing it on the ground or on some rocks, or you can make a "one-legged stand" for it. And if you want to make a one-legged stand for it, you'll need a couple of GI wooden tent poles (or something similar to them) and a 3 x 2 x 1 ½ inch block of wood.
Then make a 1 inch deep slit/cut in the center of this block of wood, drill a ½ inch deep hole on both ends about the "same diameter" as the "wooden poles" and then jam it (the wooden block) underneath the ammo can handle to see how it fits. If it's fits kind of loosely, just cut out a piece of rubber from an old bicycle inner tube tire and jam it between the block of wood and the metal ammo can handle.
Now all ya gotta do is stick the tent poles in the ground, attach the block of wood & cover to the tent poles, place the ammo can and grill on top of the cover, place some wood/charcoal inside the ammo can and you're now ready to start barbecuing!
